Fifth grader Ashley’s artwork was selected for the 2012 Galveston Bay Children’s Art Calendar. Ashley’s “Galveston Beauty” in colored pencils is featured for the month of January.  Her drawing was chosen out of 10 participating schools and more than 446 entries.

The Galveston Bay Foundation (GBF) uses the Children’s Art Calendar to build a positive relationship between students and Galveston Bay. Fifth grade students from area school districts were asked to create artwork in response to the questions, “What people, plants or animals can you find in and around Galveston Bay?” or “Who uses Galveston Bay?”

Congratulations Ashley!

In the culmination of their science unit, fourth grade students at Grace School learned a valuable lesson about the importance of electricity in the winter.

Students were asked to construct a light-weight electric building containing at least one series of circuits consisting of Christmas lights, a switch powered by a nine-volt battery, floor plan rendering and circuit drawings, and of course, snow.

Each team comprised of two students was assigned a building type (house, bank, school, etc.) and put their new knowledge to the test by creating a city. The intention of the project was to teach the students how to build a functioning series of parallel and combined circuits and build a basic understanding of electricity.

As part of the project, the students were asked to answer a series of questions to test their knowledge and absorption of the material. They were also asked to explain how things worked and discussed the multiple features within each structure. Once the structures were completed, the fourth grade class presented their "districts" to family and friends during a Winter Wonderland celebration.

Grace School is participating in the Souper Bowl of Caring from now until February 3rd. Led by the Lower School Service Learning Committee and LS Student Council, the Souper Bowl of Caring is a national movement created by young people working to fight hunger and poverty in their own communities. In the weeks leading up to Super Bowl Sunday, we are asking that you collect non-perishable food items and have your child bring them to school to help us fight hunger in Houston.

We will be giving 100% of our donations directly to the Houston Food Bank. Think about how much each of us can help by bringing in one food item! Be on the lookout for the boxes at the end of the hallways that we will be using to collect the food.  Some of the most needed items at the Houston Food Bank are:

  • Protein items such as
    • Canned tuna or chicken, packed in water
    • Canned stews and pasta/meat, easy on salt and fat
  • Peanut butter
  • Canned fruits in light syrup, natural applesauce
  • 100% juice cans or boxes
  • Canned vegetables, tomatoes, tomato sauce
  • Soups with meat and/or beans, meal-in-a-can, easy on salt and fat
  • Cereals and cereal bars, easy on sugar and fat
  • Pasta, spaghetti, macaroni, noodles
  • Packages of dry beans

Thank you in advance for your support to help Houston fight hunger!

Grace School Earns National NAEYC Accreditation
The Primary School at Grace School among the top in the nation by earning accreditation

HOUSTON (January 17, 2012) – The Primary School at Grace School, located in West Houston, has earned accreditation from the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC) – the nation’s leading organization of early childhood professionals. Grace School is now part of eight percent of preschools and early childhood programs in the nation with this accreditation.

“We’re proud to have earned the mark of quality from NAEYC and to be recognized for our commitment to reaching the highest professional and educational standards,” said Leigh Anne Shumate, Head of Primary School. “NAEYC Accreditation is the gold standard for early childhood education, and achieving such prestigious recognition lets families in our community know that children in our program are getting the best care and early learning experiences possible.”

To earn NAEYC Accreditation, Grace School went through an extensive self-study process, measuring the program and its services against the 10 NAEYC Early Childhood Program Standards and more than 400 related Accreditation criteria. The 10 standards Grace Primary School was measured against were: relationships, curriculum, teaching, assessment of child progress, health, teachers, families, community relationships, physical environment, leadership and management. The program received NAEYC Accreditation after an on-site visit by NAEYC Assessors to ensure that the program met each of the 10 program standards. As an NAEYC-accredited program, Grace Primary School will also be subject to unannounced visits during their accreditation, which lasts for five years.

“Our mission at Grace School is to provide our students with a rigorous educational program that embraces the teachings of Jesus Christ in a safe and inclusive environment,” said Dr. Liz Walgamuth, Ed.D., Head of School. “NAEYC Accreditation is a testament to our mission and also proves that the Primary School at Grace is where quality education begins.”

In the 25 years since NAEYC Accreditation was established, it has become a widely recognized sign of high-quality early childhood education. More than 7,000 programs are currently accredited by NAEYC.

“The NAEYC Accreditation system raises the bar for child care centers and other early childhood programs,” said Jerlean E. Daniel, Ph.D, executive director of NAEYC. “Having earned NAEYC Accreditation is a sign that Grace Primary School is a leader in a national effort to invest in high-quality early childhood education.”

The NAEYC Accreditation system has set voluntary professional standards for programs for young children since 1985. In September 2006, the Association revised program standards and criteria to introduce a new level of quality, accountability, and service for parents and children in child care programs. The new standards today reflect the latest research and best practices in early childhood education and development. NAEYC is committed to utilizing the newest studies and analysis on positive child outcomes to ensure young children continue receiving the highest-quality care and education possible.

KHOU, Channel 11 visited Grace to show how our Primary School successfully incorporates learning with play and proves that vigorous activity is important to children. A study released yesterday by Cincinnati Children's Hospital claimed that preschoolers spend too much time on sedentary activities, which is not the case at Grace School.
