Lower School Reading

At Grace School, we believe in authentic literacy and work to develop a lifelong love for reading in our students.  We do this through the framework of Readers Workshop.  During readers workshop students are given:

  • Time to read independently, in partnerships, or within book clubs
  • Choices about what genres they will read
  • Opportunities for conversations about their reading.

When you think about it, this is precisely what adults do in their own reading lives.  It is not only right but necessary to create the same conditions for our students.  By modeling reading behaviors, providing explicit instruction that focuses on strategic reading, and giving our students time to practice being “real readers,” we are able to provide dynamic reading experiences for all of our students.
